PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State men's basketball team got a 20-point performance from the bench on the way to a 60-59 win over the Bluefield State Big Blues at home Saturday.

The Trojans (14-9, 7-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Jacob Cooper, who had 17 points and five assists. Davian Coleman added 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks and William Hopkins helped out with 10 points and two steals from the bench.

Virginia State collected 33 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Bluefield State's 30, led by Amare Wimbush's 12 boards. The Trojans also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 11 rebounds into 15 second chance points.

Virginia State's defense held Bluefield State to only 37.3 percent shooting from the field, including 23.1 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

After falling behind 18-8, Virginia State went on an 8-0 run with 11:06 left in the first half to narrow its deficit to 18-16. The Trojans then closed the rest of the gap and grabbed a 38-29 lead heading into halftime. Virginia State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 24 of its 38 points close to the basket.

The Trojans then held on for the victory in the second half. Virginia State took care of business in the paint, recording 20 of its 22 points in the lane.
