Defensive effort leads Virginia State over Lincoln (PA) 59-53

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA --The Virginia State men's basketball team held Lincoln (PA) to just 10 percent from beyond the arc in a 2-for-20 shooting performance on the way to a 59-53 victory over the Lions on the road Saturday.

Jacob Cooper led the Trojans (15-9, 8-4) with 20 points, four assists and four steals. Amare Wimbush also added four points from the bench and Jared White chipped in as well with five points.

Led by Michael Cooper's two offensive rebounds, Virginia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 11 second chance points.

Virginia State's defense held Lincoln (PA) to only 10 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 35.3 percent from the field.

How It Happened

After falling behind 4-1, Virginia State went on a 6-0 run with 17:37 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Jacob Cooper, to take a 7-4 lead. The Trojans then added five points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 32-24 advantage. Virginia State capitalized on 14 Lincoln (PA) turnovers in the period, turning them into eight points on the other end of the floor.

Lincoln (PA) proceeded to take a 46-45 lead before Virginia State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Jacob Cooper's three, to seize a 53-46 lead with 4:00 to go in the contest. The Lions narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still cruised the rest of the way for the 59-53 win. Virginia State capitalized on six Lincoln (PA) turnovers in the period, collecting 12 points off those turnovers.
