PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State men's basketball team got a 28-point showing from the bench on the way to an 87-70 victory against the Lincoln (PA) Lions at home Wednesday.
The Trojans (13-9, 6-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Tim Uzochuwku, who had 18 points, six rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Jared White added 14 points and Jacob Cooper helped out with a double-double with 12 points and 14 assists.
Virginia State shared the ball well in Wednesday's game, racking up 23 assists on 32 made field goals. Cooper's 14 assists led the Trojans.
The Virginia State defense held Lincoln (PA) shooters to just 39 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 22-13 advantage, Virginia State went on a 7-0 run with 12:23 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Michael Cooper, to increase its lead to 29-13. The Trojans then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 47-38 advantage. Virginia State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 21 of its 47 total points.
Virginia State kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 72-60 with 5:36 to go in the contest. The Trojans kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 87-70 win. Virginia State made the most of four offensive rebounds to tack on six second chance points out of 40 total in the period.
