Virginia State shoots 50 percent from deep, defeats Winston-Salem 77-71

CE GAINES CENTER, Winston --The Virginia State men's basketball team shot 50 percent from beyond the arc on the way to a 77-71 win over the Winston-Salem Rams on the road Tuesday.

The Trojans (10-8, 3-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Jared Clawson, who had 14 points. Tim Uzochuwku tacked on 13 points and two steals and William Hopkins helped out with 12 points and five assists.

Virginia State took advantage of excellent ball movement in Tuesday's game, piling up 18 assists on 27 made field goals. Jacob Cooper's nine assists led the distribution list for the Trojans and Hopkins also contributed with five assists of his own.

The Virginia State defense was a problem in Tuesday's game, forcing 20 Winston-Salem turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 26 points on the offensive end of the floor. Cooper's five steals led the way individually for the Trojans.

How It Happened

After falling behind 23-16, Virginia State went on a 5-0 run with 6:44 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Cooper, to narrow its deficit to 23-21. Winston-Salem answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Trojans down 37-32 entering halftime.

After intermission, Virginia State came back to even it up at 59-59 before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Clawson's three, to seize a 69-59 lead with 3:50 to go in the contest. The Rams narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still cruised the rest of the way for the 77-71 win. Virginia State capitalized on 10 Winston-Salem turnovers in the period, collecting 18 points off those turnovers.
