Ettrick, Va.(Sept. 6, 2025)- The Virginia State University women's soccer team dropped a heart breaker to open the season, 3-1 against Emory and Henry Univeirsty after a three goal second half.
Virginia State struck first, but a second-half surge lifted Emory & Henry to a 3–1 comeback victory in their season opener.
The Trojans got on the board in the 23rd minute when Sasha Fields buried a finish off an assist from Morgan Parris, giving Virginia State a 1–0 lead at halftime. The first half belonged to Virginia State, who outshot the Wasps 9–5 and generated multiple corner kicks, but Emory & Henry goalkeeper Adriana Rehg made two key saves to keep her team within striking distance.
The momentum shifted after the break. Emory & Henry came out more aggressive, peppering the Virginia State defense with 11 second-half shots. Their persistence paid off in the 75th minute, when the hornets slotted home the equalizer to level the match at 1–1.
With the pressure mounting, the Wasps found their breakthrough late the 84th minute, and just two minutes later, added insurance with a clinical strike, sealing the 3–1 win.
Virginia State goalkeeper Tianna Roberts was busy throughout, recording six saves but also picking up a yellow card in the 65th minute. Despite holding a 5–1 edge in corner kicks, the Trojans couldn't generate a shot in the second half.
In the end, Emory & Henry's relentless second-half attack and balanced team effort carried them to victory, starting the season 1–0 while Virginia State fell to 0–1.
