Washington, D.C. (Mar. 1, 2025)-The Virginia State University Women's Lacrosse team defeated fellow HBCU University of District of Columbia 16-5 to earn their first win of the season. Aniyah White scored a game high seven goals.
Unique Anthony only needed 36 seconds before finding the back of the net assisted by White. A minute later UDC scored their only goal of the period. It then took until the 8-minute mark for the next goal after Nakiyah Jones caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball then fired off a shot to score her first goal of the season. A minute later White would score in a free position opportunity to end the first quarter at 3-1. The Trojans dominated the second quarter scoring seven goals with four different players scoring. Skye Whiting opened the flood gates before White would score three straight games marking her first career hat trick, Jones would add two more and Anthony netted the last. The Firebirds would add two more goals, but VSU held a 10-3 advantage going into halftime.
Both teams would score quick to begin the second half with White scoring for the Trojans at the 13:44 mark. The Trojans and Firebirds again traded goals before White, Jones and Sophia Toye scored three straight to make it 15-4. UDC added one more just before the end of the period and then to start the fourth stanza Whiting scored the final goal. The Trojans began to work the clock after getting up by double digits.
VSU outshot UDC 51-15, forced 24 turnovers and picked up 35 ground balls. Ilyana Jones collected seven saves and recorded her first collegiate win. Virginia State returns home for a game against Barton College on Tuesday March 4 at 3 pm.
