VSU suffers heart breaking loss in final minutes

Ettrick, Va. (Mar. 1, 2025)- Going into the final two minutes of the game the Virginia State University men's lacrosse team saw a Holy Family shot from the wing, find the back of the net to emerge victorious 11-10.

The Tigers started the scoring for the day four minutes into the game, but it was VSU who were firing off shots early as they had five attempts. Three minutes later Donovan Elmore and Devray Kirkland II put the Trojans up 2-1. The Trojans continued to apply pressure firing off near miss until Mile Jackson found the back of the net. The Tigers however began to mount of momentum as they would score the next five goals from the end of the first quarter and second quarter. The second quarter while VSU didn't score they fired off 10 shots causing the Tigers goalie to make five tough saves.

Where Holy Family controlled the second stanza the Trojans held all the momentum in the third period. In total VSU would net five goals by four different players. Andre Bigham only needed 26 seconds to score in the second half. Virginia State continued to fire off shots before Elmore caused a turnover and scored on the breakaway goal to cut the deficit to one goal, 6-5. With five minutes left in the quarter Elmore found the back of the net after shots by John Goebel and Elijah Bryant just missed. Jesse Goebel would net the goal that gave VSU the lead back and then with 19 second remaining in the period Kalani Laughlin scored to make it 8-6 going into the final 15 minutes.

To start the fourth Holy Family won the opening faceoff but threw the ball away and once the Trojans cleared Bryant went right down the middle of the field and shot a bouncer that just went over the goalkeeper to make it 9-6. However, in just three minutes the Tigers scored three goals to tie the game at 9 with 10 minutes remaining. They would eventually take the lead before Laughlin tied the game with 8:30 remaining. The teams would continue to have close attempt to retake the lead but with two minutes left a shot went high for Holy Family then on the restart the game winning goal was scored. Then for the final 9- seconds the Tigers played keep away to win.

VSU outshot HFU 54-37 and collected nine more ground balls (47-36). Jayden Reid had a good day in the face-off winning 16-23. The Trojans(2-4) will return to action Friday March 7 at 1 pm against Lander inside Rogers Stadium.
