Ettrick, Va. (Feb. 24, 2025)- The Virginia State Women's Lacrosse team dropped a match to the University of Charleston 14-5 with Kayla Carroll-Williams scoring all five goals for the Trojans.
The Golden Eagles and the Trojans were both feeling each other out for the first two minutes until Sophia Toye and Carroll-Willams fired off free position shots. Then on UC first free position opportunity they found the back of the net at the 10:15 mark. Charleston continued to apply the pressure and added another goal at 5:24. While the Trojans wouldn't get on the board, they added four more shots with three being saved.
UC added another goal 90 seconds into the second period and then a minute later made it a 5-0 game with two quick goals with 12 minutes remaining in the half. Then with 4:33 left in the peiod, UC added a sixth goal before a free position goal from Carroll-Willams ended the dry spell for VSU. The Golden Eagles added two more goals after then with nine seconds left Carroll-Willams added another goal this time assisted by Aniyah White.
It took five minutes before UC added their ninth and tenth goals in the third quarter. UC eventually expanded their lead to double digits, 12-2, with 6 minutes left in the quarter. However, with 90 seconds left in the stanza Carroll-Williams added another goal this time assisted by Jamilah Daniels. Then 40 seconds into the fourth quarter UC added another goal before back-to-back goals from Carroll-Williams made it a 13-5 game with just under 7 minutes remaining. UC added one more goal and then played good defense to hold the Trojans without a shot on goal for the final five minutes.
VSU went 20-28 on clears and picked up 22 ground balls. Ilyana Jones finished the game with 12 saves in her second collegiate game. The Trojans move to 0-2 on the year and will be back at Rogers Stadium on Wednesday February 26 at 3 pm against Wilmington University.
