Trojans take down Bluefield State 3-1 after dropping first set

BLUEFIELD, W. Va. --The Virginia State volleyball team stormed back after an early one-set deficit to secure a 3-1 victory (16-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-12) over the Bluefield State Lady Blues Thursday on the road at Ned Shott Gymnasium.

The conference win improved Virginia State's record to 6-8 overall and 5-1 in CIAA play.

The Trojans attack was paced by Gracie Darville, who finished with 15 kills on the day, and by Anya McKinley, who had 11 while hitting .5. got 17 digs from Kellee Craig along with seven blocks from McKinley and seven rejections from Amaya Cooper to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Trojans found themselves in an early deficit, dropping a tough first set 25-16. Virginia State trailed by as many as 10 points as Bluefield State grabbed the advantage for good at 4-3 in a set that was notted up two times before the Lady Blues took control.

SET 2 | Virginia State rallied after dropping the first set to take set two 25-19, evening the match at one set apiece. The Trojans never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 13-12 in a set that showcased three lead changes before Virginia State took over the lead.

SET 3 | Virginia State built on that second-set success with a victory in set number three to open up a lead at two sets to one. The Trojans scored first and never trailed in the set to earn a 25-13 victory. Virginia State opened up as much as a 12 point lead at 24-12 before finishing off the set, collecting 15 kills in the process.

SET 4 | Virginia State finished off the match with a 25-12 fourth-set victory, winning their third set in a row. A solid showing on the attacking end led the Trojans to victory in the set. Virginia State registered a .407 attack percentage with 14 kills in the set win. The Trojans ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza. Virginia State also supplemented their offense with four aces in the set.
