Trojans split final two games of CIAA Round Up

FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Virginia State volleyball team cruised to a three-set victory (25-15, 25-16, 25-15) against the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls Saturday at Felton J Capel Arena then dropped a 5 set match to Winston-Salem State Univeristy.

The split improved Virginia State's record to 5-8 overall and 4-1 in CIAA play.

Gracie Darville finished with nine kills on the day to lead the Trojans offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .474. got 14 digs from Kellee Craig to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Trojans jumped out to an early lead, handily winning the first set 25-15. Virginia State never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Trojans took over the lead. Virginia State also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | Virginia State continued to roll after a set-one win by securing a 25-16 victory in set two. The Trojans took control of the set lead early on at 2-1 and never trailed. Virginia State opened its biggest lead of the stanza, nine points, to finish off the set. The Virginia State offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Virginia State took the third set to sweep the match. The Trojans led from the opening point on in the set to earn a 25-15 victory. Virginia State opened up as much as a 10 point lead at 17-7 before closing out the set, totaling 15 kills along the way.

GAME 2

The Trojans attack was paced by Gracie Darville, who finished with 24 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .408, and by Amaya Cooper, who had 11. got 23 digs from Kellee Craig to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Trojans earned a set-one victory 25-21 powered by a solid performance on the attacking end. Virginia State registered a .351 attack percentage with 17 kills in the set victory. The Trojans opened up a 23-17 lead in the stanza and coasted to victory from there.

SET 2 | Virginia State took the second set 25-19 to promptly grab a 2-0 lead. The Trojans took control of the set lead early on at 2-1 and held the lead the rest of the way. Virginia State led by as many as nine points at 12-3 before finishing off the set. Virginia State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking five Winston-Salem attacks in the stanza.

SET 3 | Winston-Salem avoided a sweep with a set-three victory to make it a 2-1 match. The Trojans dropped a tough set 25-18. Virginia State trailed by as many as eight points as Winston-Salem grabbed the advantage for good at 8-7 in a set that was tied up five times before the Rams took over the lead.

SET 4 | Virginia State then dropped their second straight set 25-20 to brind the match level at two sets apiece. The Trojans fell behind on the first point and never took the lead before losing the set.

SET 5 | Virginia State won the first two sets, but couldn't take another set on their way to losing the match. The Trojans couldn't endure a ferocious Winston-Salem rally in the fifth set, falling after leading by seven points at 10-3 earlier in the set.
