Trojans secure 3-2 win over Shaw

BOWIE, MD --The Virginia State volleyball team took down the Shaw Bears 3-2 (25-23, 16-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-10) Sunday at AC Jordan Arena.

The win improved the Trojans' record to 9-9 overall and 8-2 in CIAA play.

The Trojans attack was paced by Gracie Darville, who finished with 14 kills on the day, and by Amaya Cooper, who had 10 while hitting .296.Darville also pitched in with five aces in the contest. VSU got 15 digs from Kellee Craig to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Trojans endured a back-and-forth first set to win 25-23 in a stanza that featured four lead changes and was tied eight times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match. Virginia State also supplemented their offense with four aces in the opening set. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Shaw attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | Virginia State then lost the second set 25-16, evening things at a set each. Virginia State trailed by as many as 10 points as Shaw grabbed the advantage for good at 8-7 in a set that was knotted up five times before the Bears took over the lead.

SET 3 | Virginia State then dropped their second set in a row, falling behind in the match two sets to one. The Trojans came up short by the score of 25-20. Shaw grabbed the advantage for good at 5-4 in a set that was knotted up four times before the Bears took over the lead.

SET 4 | Virginia State broke their two set losing streak and forced a fifth set with a 25-23 victory in set number four. The Trojans seized the set win in spite of trailing by as many as eight points at 16-8 before rallying to claim victory. Virginia State grabbed the lead at 21-20 and hung on the rest of the way. Virginia State also supplemented their offense with four aces in the set.

SET 5 | Virginia State fought back from down two sets to one to win the next two sets, culminating in a 15-10 fifth-set victory, and earn the 3-2 win. The Trojans grabbed control of the set-five lead at 3-2 and held it the rest of the way. Virginia State led by as many as five points at 14-9 before closing out the set.
