Virginia State Outscores Johnson C. Smith in High-Scoring Affair

Ettrick, VA - In an exciting back-and-forth battle, Virginia State University outlasted Johnson C. Smith University 75-68. The game featured a standout performance from Virginia State's Clint Wright Jr., while Johnson C. Smith's balanced team effort kept things close. Ultimately, Virginia State's strong second-half shooting and bench depth proved to be the deciding factors in the victory.

The first half was a tight contest, with both teams looking to find an offensive rhythm. Johnson C. Smith shot an impressive 48.1% from the field (13-of-27), including 6-of-11 from three-point range (54.5%). They were led by Sherrell and Anderson, who combined for 20 points, but Virginia State's Wright kept his team in the game with 14 points of his own, including 4 three-pointers.

Virginia State's shooting was less efficient (12-of-30, 40%), but they stayed in the game thanks to their strong free-throw shooting (6-of-8, 75%). Despite trailing by 5 at halftime, 33-28, Virginia State's bench contributions, particularly from Bynum and Jefferson, kept the game within reach.

Virginia State came out with renewed energy after the break, outscoring Johnson C. Smith 47-35 in the second half. The key to their success was a surge in shooting efficiency. They shot 55.6% from the field (15-of-27) and 90% from the free-throw line (9-of-10), including a perfect 2-of-2 from Wright, who finished with 14 points in the second half alone.

In contrast, Johnson C. Smith struggled in the second half, shooting 43.5% (10-of-23) and making just 1-of-4 from three-point range (25%). Although they fought hard, including a late push led by Sherrell and Anderson, they were unable to close the gap as Virginia State continued to capitalize on second-chance opportunities and made key free throws down the stretch.

Virginia State's offensive depth and strong shooting in the second half were enough to hold off Johnson C. Smith's competitive first-half performance and secure a 75-68 victory. Clint Wright Jr.'s dominance and the contributions from the bench were pivotal, while Johnson C. Smith's late-game struggles in shooting and defensive consistency ultimately allowed Virginia State to pull away. With the win, Virginia State continues to show its resilience and depth, while Johnson C. Smith will look to regroup and improve their second-half performance in upcoming games.
