Ettrick, VA,(2/7/2024)-The Virginia State men's basketball team (11-11) took on Cheyney University (0-11) Wednesday where the Trojans completely decimated Cheyney University by 48 points. Final score 108-60.
Some early turnovers from Cheyney and good ball movement by the Trojans helped Virginia State take an 11-point lead before the first timeout of the game is called. A 3-0 run by Cheyney cut the lead to eight. An alley op assist thrown by Daryl Mackey Jr. and finished by Tremere Brown pushed the Trojan's lead back to nine. Just two plays later Chris Hampton threw down another dunk assisted by Jonathan Norfleet. A made three pointer by Hampton gives the Trojans a 16 point lead. Strong defense out of the timeout by the Trojans forced back to back shot clock violations. Cheyney hadn't scored since the 11:54 mark. A made euro step lay up by Cheyney's Jalen DeLoach finally snapped their six minute scoring drought. Kamyrn Edwards knocked down a three as Kendall Bynum found him as a trailer. Trojans go into halftime with a 27 point lead. Chris Hampton led the Trojans at the half in points and rebounds scoring 15 and bringing down five boards. Kendall Bynum led the team in assists with six, really moving the rock.
A made lay up by Dajour Rucker to start the 2nd puts the Trojans at the 50-point mark with 19:44 left to play. Anthony Crosby had back-to-back dunks including a nice off the backboard alley op finish to bring the lead to 26. A play that starts on one side of the court and ends on the other leads to another basket by Hampton giving him 18. The Trojans don't give up on the boards and that leads to a Mackey Jr. three pointer ballooning the lead to 42. Coach empties his bench with 9:27 to go in the game. But the fun doesn't stop there, the bench keeps pouring it on. It was a dunk fest to end the game for Stephan Morris. The Trojans would win this one easily.
Guard Chris Hampton led the Trojans in points and rebounds with 18 and six. Guard Kendall Bynum led the team in assists with eight. Virginia State plays their next game against Lincoln University on Saturday at 2pm where they will look to get a win after falling to them by just two points the last time they played.
