Ettrick, Va (Nov. 7, 2024)- The Virginia State Volleyball team (13-7, 11-3) grinded out a tough 3-1 victory against Virginia Union (9-17, 6-8) to keep their top position in the northern division.
In the first set VSU would jump out to an early 5-2 advantage. From there the teams would go back and forth making it 12-9. However, after that the Trojans would go on a 6-2 run where Amaya Cooper, Celene Mclean and Gracie Darville all recorded kills. Four straight points from the Panthers would get them right back into the set at 18-15. With the score at 20-17 the Trojans would score three straight points to gain some separation. Then a kill from Denver Watkins won the set for VSU 25-19.
VUU would start the second set in control with a 9-4 score. The Trojans would start to chip away at the lead eventually making the score a one-point game after a kill from Green and an error, 16-15. The Panthers would answer that with a 6-1 run to grow their lead to 22-16. Kills from Peyton Reese and Helena Eubanks tried to move the momentum back to the Trojans, but Virginia Union won the set 25-20.
Set three was tightly contested to start at 4-3, VSU where Anya McKinley and Darville recorded kills. Then with the score at 9-7 Virginia State exploded, scoring eight of the next 11 points. Six of those eight points were recorded via the kills. From there the teams would trade points until the Trojans scored the final two points by Kills from Green and Darville to win the set 25-21.
Virginia State went on an 11-4 run to start the final fourth set. Seven kills were registered and Kellee Craig recorded two service aces. Both teams would score five points apiece to make it 16-9. The Panthers would fight and managed to make it a three-point set at 201-7 but the Trojans ended the match on a 5-2 run that saw Watkins record a kill before Darville registered three straight kills to win the set and the match 25-19.
Darville was the only Trojans with double digit kills at 16. Reese filled the stat sheet totaling six kills, 32 assists and eight digs. The Trojans hit the road on Tuesday November 12 against Lincoln at 6 p.m.
