Lincoln, Pa. (Nov. 12, 2024)- The Virginia State Volleyball team increased its win streak to seven games with a 3-0 sweep of the Lions of Lincoln University.
In the first set VSU and LUPA would play to a seven all tie. Four different Trojans would register a kill Heleana Eubanks, Anya McKinley, Gracie Darville and Amaya Cooper. Virginia state would gain some separation scoring seven of the next 10 points taking advantage of three Lion errors. VSU would grow their lead to 21-13 after back-to-back errors from Lincoln. Two straight kills from Eubanks would win the set for VSU 25-17.
Set two was tightly contested starting 5-5. The Lions would then score five straight points after a kill from Eubanks to give them a 10-6 advantage. Lincoln would continue to grow their advantage to 17-12. After a kill from Denver Watkins and Kellee Craig service ace it made it a two-point game, 18-16. Both teams would go on four-point swing to make it 22-20 which forced a LUPA timeout. A kill from Cooper tied the game at 23 before the Lions took their second timeout of the set. The Lions would score out of the timeout but two errors and a kill from McKinley won the set 26-24 for VSU.
The Trojans would come out hot to open the third set as they held a nine-five advantage with only Darville recording one kill during the run. LUPA would chip away at the Trojan lead eventually making it a one-point set at 14-13. Two kills from Taniyah Epps, an attack error, a Craig service ace and a Cooper kill put VSU on top 22-16. Darville would register two kills out of the final three points the Trojans would need to sweep the Lions 25-20.
Darville and Eubanks lead the team with nine and eight kills respectfully as both Peyton Reese and Leila Jackson recorded double digit assists with 20 and 10. With the win VSU is now 14-7 overall and 12-3 in conference remaining atop the norther division. The regular season wraps up Thursday at Bowie State comes to the MPC at 6 p.m. for Senior Day.
