The game kicked off with Belmont Abbey establishing dominance from the start. Just over a minute into the match, Haley Long found the back of the net, assisted by Madison Gnolfo, giving the Abbey an early lead. This momentum continued with quick goals from Anna Richard and Reagan Cullen, who capitalized on defensive lapses from Virginia State.
Despite the relentless pressure from Belmont Abbey's attackers, Virginia State's goalkeeper,
Maya Cajchun, delivered a commendable performance, making several key saves that prevented the scoreline from widening further in the first half. However, by the 19th minute, Belmont Abbey had already scored four goals, demonstrating their offensive efficiency and ability to exploit opportunities.
As the second half began, Belmont Abbey continued where they left off. A team goal early in the half marked the fifth point of the match, followed by a well-executed play that saw Hanna Doerr score the seventh goal, assisted by Grace Siders and Grace Gilmore. Belmont Abbey's ability to maintain high pressure and quick ball movement was evident as they consistently challenged Virginia State's defense. VSU had three shot attempts made by
Morgan Parris,
Damaris Gaines, and
Alana Martin.
Virginia State made numerous substitutions to inject fresh energy into their lineup, but they struggled to generate offensive threats against a well-organized Belmont Abbey defense. Cajchun remained busy, making multiple saves, but the team's efforts were unable to shift the momentum in their favor for the win.
