Bowie, Md.- The Virginia State University volleyball team started conference play with a four set win over Bowie State University 25-17, 25-16, 20-25, 25-10.
To open the first set VSU jumped out to an early 7-1 lead with Amaya Cooper producing two kills during the run and a service ace for both Peyton Reese and Aaliyah Bethea. The Trojans eventually doubled the Bulldogs score 12-6. Virginia State would go on a 9-4 run to go up 21-9, during the long run three different players would register a kill and two different players would record a service ace. Bowie State wouldn't give up as they went on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 22-15, but a Kill by De'Mya Robinson, a service error and an attack error helped secure the first set 25-17 in favor of VSU.
The second set started with a 7-2 run for the Trojans, with four different players registering a kill. After the Bulldogs made the score 9-7 VSU rattled off three straight points thanks to a kill by Cooper and two attack errors. That would be the start of a 7-1 run to make the score 16-8. Thanks to kills Helena Eubanks, Gabrielle Bradley, Robinson and Cooper the Trojans found themselves just one point from securing the second set 24-13. After three straight points by Bowie State Leila JAckson got the set winning kill.
After Virginia State led wire to wire in the first two sets, the third set saw Bowie State jump out to an early 4-2 advantage. VSU would get its first lead of the third set after Reese got a service ace to make the score 8-7. The teams would go back and forth with neither gaining any separation with the score tied at 14. Bowie would then rattle off three straight points to get their largest lead of the match up to that point. Bowie State would pull away in this set winning 25-20.
After a 3-3 tie early in the fourth set, VSU rattled off four straight points with a kill by Kennedy Hoge and Jackson to obtain a 7-3 advantage. Later with a 10-5 lead, the Trojans went on a quick 4-0 run to extend the margin to 14-5. VSU would later again double the score at 16-8 after a kill by Bradley. Robinson late in the set would get back-to-cack service aces to give VSU a 22-10 advantage. Just three points later the Trojans would win the set and the match 25-10.
With the win VSU moves to 2-7 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA and Bowie State drops to 2-12 overall and 0-1 in the CIAA. Virginia State host the CIAA Round-up over the weekend and will play Claflin at 1 p.m.
