Richmond, Va. (Nov. 9, 2023)- The Virginia State University volleyball team traveled to Virginia Union and swept the panthers 25-21, 26-24, 25-18.
The first set saw the Trojans go up 11-9 early in the set after a back-and-forth affair for much of the start of the match. The Panthers would eventually gain a lead of three points at 16-13. The Trojans fought back to tie the game at 17 with kills from Leila Jackson and Kenedy Hoge. A kill from Helena Eubanks, an attack error and a kill from Peyton Reese ended the set with the Trojans win.
VSU opened the second set with an 8-2 run with Eubanks recording four kills during the opening run. However, the Panthers would fight back, and the Trojans would find themselves only up by one, 18-17. VUU would eventually get their first lead of the set 21-20, before VSU answered by scoring four of the next five points. A kill by Eubanks and an attack error by Virginia union ended the set.
The third set saw the Trojans have a 13-11 lead. After Virgina State would go on an 8-1 run with three different players recording a kill. The Panthers would end the run by scoring three straight to try and regain the momentum but Eubanks would score two kills in between VUU points to win the match for VSU.
Eubanks led the game with 15 kills and was followed by Hoge with nine. Both Jackson and Reese recorded double digit assists with 17 and 13 respectfully. VSU next game will be senior day on Thursday November 9 against Bowie State at 6 p.m.
