Ettrick, Va. (Nov. 9, 2023)- The Virginia State University volleyball team hosted the Bowie State Bulldogs on senior day and dropped an exciting five setter 3-2 (20-25, 19-25, 25-13, 25-14, 13-15)
After dropping the first two sets VSU opened the third set on a 9-2 run with Jennah Kareem recording three straight service aces. After BSU scored four straight points, Kennedy Hoge gave the serve back to the Trojans. Hoge would then serve, and the Trojans would score seven straight points to go up 17-6. Eventually the Trojans would get on the board by winning the match. During the end of the third set Gabrielle Bradley recorded four of the final five points.
The fourth set was completely controlled by the Trojans as they opened with a 21-11 run. Five different VSU players would record a kill during the run. After three straight point from the Bulldogs, two errors and kills from Alexis McNair and Helena Eubanks won the set for Virginia State.
VSU continued their hot streak into the fifth and final set as Bradley opened the set with a kill and Peyton Reese got two kills to make the score 5-1. Hoge and Leyla Conley got kills for points six and seven and then an error from Bowie State made the teams switch sides. Coming out of the switch BSU scored four of the next five points to get themselves right back in the game. With the game in a 12-6, Bowie State would end the match on a 9-1 run to win.
McNair, Eubanks and Bradley all obtained 11 kills to lead the Trojans. Leila Jackson and Reese had 24 and 19 assists respectfully. With the loss VSU is now 10-15 overall and 9-8 in the CIAA, while Bowie State improves to 6-25 overall and 4-13 in the CIAA. Both teams will now look to the CIAA tournament on Nov. 14 in Salem, Virginia.
