Elizabeth City, N.C. (November 2, 2023)- The Virginia State University (9-14, 8-7 CIAA) volleyball team lost a match to the Vikings of Elizabeth City State (16-12, 13-2 CIAA) 3-0 (18-25, 11-25, 16-25).
In the first set VSU jumped out to an early 12-7 lead with four different players registering a kill. However, ECSU would answer with eight straight points to get a three-point advantage at 15-12. After kills from Alexis McNair and Kennedy Hoge made it a one-point game, 18-17, the Vikings rattled off three straight kills and would eventually end the set on a 7-1 run to win the set 25-18.
The second set was controlled by Elizabeth City State as they opened with an 18-4 run. McNair, Peyton Resse and Kelsea Saulny registered a kill each for the Trojans scoring during the Vikings run. Then two errors from ECSU would give VSU its first consecutive points of the set. ECSU would go on to secure the set with a final score of 25-11.
The third set was also firmly in the grasp of the Vikings as they started with a 12-5 advantage. Helena Eubanks and Najlaa Williams both recorded kills to start the third set. After the opening run the teams played a back and forth set until ECSU held a 20-9 advantage. After that VSU would answer by scoring four of the next five points making it 21-13. The Trojans continued to fight even getting the score to 23-16 but ECSU scored the last two points to win the match.
Virginia State next game will be Monday November 6 against Virginia Union with start time scheduled for 6 p.m.
