Trojans suffer setback at Lincoln

Lincoln, PA.- The Virginia State University volleyball team traveled to Lincoln University and dropped the match in four sets 3-1 (22-25, 13-25, 25-20, 26-28). 

In the first set VSU opened with a 5-1 run with four errors by Lincoln starting the run. The Lions would eventually get back to even at 11 a piece. The Trojans would answer that by scoring six of the next nine points to make it 17-14. However, the Lions would end the set on a 11-5 run to go up one set to none 25-22. 

To begin set two VSU would find themselves down 11-3, with their three points coming from two errors by the Lions and a kill from Gabrielle Bradley. Later in the set Bradley would deliver a kill and two straight service aces to make the score 13-7. The Lions would eventually double the Trojans at 18-9 and they would never look back winning the set 25-13. 

In set three VSU would open with a 7-3 run with Helena Eubanks producing three kills. The game would be knotted up at 12 all thanks to a kill from Kennedy Hoge.  The teams would continue to go back and forth until VSU would get a two-point advantage with a service ace from Aaliyah Bethea and a kill from Hoge to make it 18-16. VSU would score three straight points with another kill from Hoge, a service ace from Leila Jackson and a bad set from a Lions player making it 23-18. A kill from Peyton Reese and an attacking error gave the set to the Trojans 25-20. 

The fourth set saw the game be tied at 5 before Lincoln rattled off three straight point with two kills an error by the Trojans. VSU would eventually take a 12-10 lead after benefiting from four errors by Lincoln University. The Lions would tie the game up at 15 and the Trojans would rattle off three points with two kills from Amaya Cooper and an attack error. The Trojans would eventually go up 24-21 before Lincoln managed to tie the game with three straight points. The Lions would go up 26-25 with a chance to win the match but a setting error gave the Trojans another chance. The lions would eventually get a kill and with a Trojans error would win the set 28-26. 

Reese finished with nine kills and 13 assists. Hoge and Eubanks finished with eight and seven kills, respectfully.  

With the loss VSU is now 7-13 overall and 6-6 in conference play, while Lincoln improves to 4-18 overall and get their first conference win at 1-9 now. Virginia State returns home and will play Virginia Union on Thursday October 26 with the start time scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
