Trojans sweep rivals Panthers

Ettrick, Va. (October 26, 2023)- The Virginia State University volleyball team welcomed the Panthers of Virginia Union and swept them 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-14) 

To start the first set VSU opened with a 10-5 advantage with three different Trojans getting a kill. VUU would eventually make it a 13-9 game and after that the Trojans went on 5-1 run with four attack errors by the panthers. VSU would eventually be two points away from winning the first set at 23-13, but VUU would rattle off four straight points to get right back into the set. However, a kill by Kennedy Hoge would secure the set for Virginia State.  

Set two was a back-and-forth affair for the majority of the set. VUU would have the advantage at 5-2 before VSU came back with three straights to tie. Neither team would hold a two-point advantage till a kill from Amaya Cooper made it 14-12 Trojans. The teams would be knotted up at 20 all before a kill from Helena Eubanks and Peyton Reese made it a 22-21 game. Reese and Hoge ended the set with back-to-back kills to help VSU go up two sets. 

The third and finals set was in complete control by VSU. They started the set by doubling the Panthers score at 16-8. During the run six different Trojans would register a kill and Reese and Leyla Conley both recorded two kills. VUU would end the run with three straight points to reach the double-digit threshold. However, VSU would score nine of the next 12 points to win the match. 

As a team VSU hit .316 % compared to Virginia Union .157 %. Cooper led the team with 10 kills followed by Reese, Hoge and Eubanks with six kills each. VSU will welcome Bluefield State to the MPC on Monday October 30 at 6:00 p.m.
