Trojans fall to Vikings; Williams collects 1k digs

Ettrick, Va.- The Virginia State University women's volleyball team hosted the Vikings of Elizabeth City State 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 9-25, 16-25). During the game Libero Najlaa Williams eclipsed the 1k digs mark. 

ECSU jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set before VSU would score four straight points to tie the game. Kennedy Hoge would give the Trojans their first lead of the game after she got a service ace and made the score 12-11. ECSU would answer with a 9-3 run to get within four points of winning the set 21-15. VSU would try and hold on as they made it a 23-20 game after a kill by Peyton Reese and another service ace by Hoge, but the Vikings would score two points to win the set. 

Elizabeth City again opened the set with an 8-3 lead, but VSU would quickly tie the game back at 10 apiece. Leila Jackson would get a service ace and begin a mini run for the Trojans to get a three-point advantage 15-12. ECSU would tie the game, but Virginia State would answer with five unanswered points with kills from Helena Eubanks and Amaya Cooper. The set would eventually win the set thanks to a service error by the Vikings. 

The third set was under ECSU's control as they won 25-9. The Vikings opened the set on a 19-4 run. The fourth set was tightly competitive. VSU was the one to open the scoring with a 7-4 run. However, ECSU would make the score 15-9 before the Trojans would score six straight to tie the game at 15 and regain all the momentum. However, the Vikings would end the match on a 10-1 run to not only win the set but the match. 

Peyton Reese finished the game with a double-double, 12 assists and 11 digs. Williams led the team with 18 digs and Jackson led the team with 13 assists. With the loss VSU drops to 7-12 overall and 6-5 in conference play, while ECSU improves to 12-11 overall and 9-2 in conference play. 

Next game for the Trojans will be in Pennsylvania as they take on Lincoln University on Monday October 23 at 6:00 p.m.
