Trojans Win Five of the Last Six Matches After Sweeping Bowie State 3-0 to earn First Conference Win

ETTRICK, VA --The Virginia State Volleyball team (6-7) earn its first conference victory of the 2022 season after a clean sweep again Bowie State 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-18) Thursday evening. The Trojans have just won five of their last six matches and are just one win away from .500. 
 
 
Game Notes
  • Once again, freshman sensation Amaya Cooper led the team in kills with 10 while her partner-in-crime Helena Eubanks had nine.
  • Najlaa Williams led the team with three aces and led the match with 16 digs in the contest while Jennah Kareem accounted for 10.
  • Zaria Irons earned a personal season-high four blocks in the win.
  •  Makenzy Johnson led her team with 14 assists while Emma Quarles earned 12 assists.
  • VSU controlled the net winning the kills battle 38-23
  • The Trojans earned the edge in digs 47-33. 
     
    How It Happened
    SET 1 | After the Bulldogs were able to earn the early lead 2-3, kills from Amaya Cooper and Zaria Irons helped the Trojans gain the lead 6-3. While the Bulldogs were able to knot the match at six all, back-to-back kills from Cooper made the score 11-7. BSU scored seven straight points to go up by three before VSU was able to tie the first set 18-18. The Trojans went on a clutch run of five points to go up 22-18. As the Bulldogs would attempt to fight back, the Trojans scored three straight points to take set one 25-21.
     
    SET 2 | Set two started off a back-and-fourth affair until the Trojans were able to earn the slight edge 6-4. VSU continued to control the set after winning four of five points to extend their lead to 12-8. After Jennah Kareem earned a service ace, the Trojans took a five-point lead 20-15. Even after the Bulldogs won three straight points when the Trojans had set point, VSU earned the victory in set after Jennah Kareem put a powerful swing on a ball set by Emma Quarles which resulted in a kill to end the set 25-21 in favor of the Trojans.
     
    SET 3 | The Trojans meant business early in set three taking a 6-1 lead thanks to a pair of kills from Helena Eubanks and a service ace from Najlaa Williams. The Bulldogs were able to fight back to make the score just 7-6. However, after the Trojans went on a 4-1 run, they were able to extend their lead to 13-8. VSU scored four straight to maintain the lead 18-12. The Trojans earned match point after scoring six of seven points late in the third set. Emma Quarles did the honors of earning the last point of the match as Virginia State took set three 25-18.

    What's Next
    Virginia State will get the weekend to rest up before heading up to Lincoln (Pa.) to face the Lions of Lincoln University (Pa.) on Monday, September 19 at 6:00 p.m.
