Bluefield, WV – Despite committing 25 turnovers in the contest, the Trojans were able to roll past the Big Blue of Bluefield State 87-67. VSU won the rebound battle thanks to a season-high 55 to BSU's 32. They shot 55.4% from the field and 50% from three-point range (Tied season-high). The Trojans held BSU to 30.7% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc. The Trojans scored over half of their points in the painted area with 50. The squad also tied their season-high in blocks as well with six. The Trojans however struggled to stay out of foul trouble as eight players had two or more fouls which led to 18 free throws for Bluefield State. The Trojans had four players end in double figures while two ended with 20 points.
Terrence Hunter-Whitfield and Zach Newkirk combined for 40 points in the matchup as both players ended their night with 20 points and four assists. Hunter-Whitfield went a perfect 6-of-6 (100%) from the foul line while shooting 7-of-11 (63.6%) from the field along with six rebounds and a block. Zach Newkirk earned a season-high in points shooting an efficient 7-of-9 (77.7%) from the field and 3-of-4 (75%) from beyond the arc. Francis "BJ" Fitzgerald earned his third double-double of the season accounting for 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds with a season-high three steals and two blocks. Fitzgerald hit 4-of-7 (57.1%) of his shots from the field and went 2-of-4 (50%) from beyond the arc which makes this the fifth game Fitzgerald hit two or more three-pointers in a game. Tremere Brown controlled the painted area on the offensive end yet again scoring 14 points on 7-11 (63.6%) from the field along with a season-high seven rebounds in the win. Stephan Morris (8) and Dajour Rucker (7) both earned season-highs in the rebounding category while Stephon Roberts earned a season-high eight points on 4-of-5 (80%) shooting from the field along with a pair of blocks.
