VSU Volleyball Earns Sweep Against Johnson C. Smith to Wrap Up Day One of the CIAA Volleyball Roundup

RALEIGH, NC – The Trojans earned the sweep against Johnson C. Smith even though they needed extra points to do so in the second and third sets (25-16, 27-25, 27-25).

How It Happened
SET 1 | After a back-and-fourth start, VSU scored four of five points led by a pair of back-to-back kills from Helena Eubanks to take a 10-6 lead. The Trojans would go on to score five straight points to take a 17-9 lead. As the Golden Bulls attempted to make a comeback, the Trojans scored four of five points to take the first set 25-16.

SET 2 | Following a kill from Alexis McNair and an ace from Alexis Baker, the Trojans took an early 8-3 lead. The Golden Bulls answered with a 9-1 run to take the lead 10-14. The Trojans were able to find their rhythm in the set scoring four of the next five points even the match at 19. The two teams would continue to battle back-and-fourth until Helena Eubanks was able to end the set with a powerful kill 27-25.

SET 3 | With their backs against the wall, the Golden Bulls come out swinging with a 1-7 run to open the set. The Trojans would answer with a 7-2 run to take the lead 14-12. After a tie at 19, the Golden Bulls scored four of five points to take the lead 23-20. After the Trojans went on their 5-1 run, they gained the lead back with the score at 25-24. The Trojans capitalized on back-to-back mistakes to take set three 27-25.


What's Next
The Trojans will regroup and hit the court again in Emery gym again tomorrow Sunday, October 9 at 3:00 p.m. to take on St. Augustine's as they prepare to conclude their participation in the second and final CIAA Volleyball Roundup of the season.
