RALEIGH, NC – The VSU Volleyball team looks forward to returning home after a letdown against St. Augustine's 2-3 (23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 18-25, 12-15).
Game Notes
- After setting a new career-high against WSSU just a day ago, CIAA digs leader Najlaa Williams sets a new career-high with 34 digs.
- Helena Eubanks earned a season-high 17 kills on a .293 hitting percentage in the loss while Amaya Cooper amassed 10 kills.
- Kennedy Hoge and Makenzy Johnson led the team with two service aces.
- Emma Quarles tied her career-high with a monumental 27 assists while Makenzy Johnson added 12.
- Zaria Irons led the team with three blocks.
- The Trojans set new season-highs in kills with 59 and points with 74.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The first set was a back-and-forth affair as the match saw five ties as the score came to 10 all. After the Trojans scored four of five points, they were able to take a 16-14 lead thanks to kills from
Zaria Irons and
Emma Quarles. SAU then went on a 6-1 run to take a 17-20 lead. Even though the Trojans were able to cut their lead to just one at 23-24, the Falcons were able to close out the set 23-25.
SET 2 | After the Trojans were able to take a 8-5 lead early on, SAU scored five points straight to take a 8-9 lead. This sparked an 8-1 run for the Trojans which allowed them to take a 17-12 lead thanks to kills from
Helena Eubanks and
Amaya Cooper. SAU went on to tie the match at 21 before the Trojans went on a 4-2 run to take set two 25-23.
SET 3 | The Trojans got off to a fast start in set three taking a 8-1 lead headlined by a pair of kills from
Helena Eubanks. Despite the comeback attempt from the Falcons, the Trojans continued to control the set 19-11 led by kills from
Zaria Irons,
Amaya Cooper,
Helena Eubanks and
Alexis McNair. The Trojans had no problem closing out the set as they took set three 25-16.
SET 4 | The fourth set got off to an extremely competitive start as a tie came at five, six and seven. SAU would gain a little breathing room scoring four points straight to take an 11-15 lead. The Falcons got even hotter going on a 7-1 run which brought them to set point at 18-24. SAU would go on to force a deciding set after winning 18-25.
SET 5 | The Trojans earned the early advantage in the fifth set taking a 9-5 lead thanks to kills from
Leyla Conley and
Makayla Berry. This motivated a 8-1 run by the Falcons which gave them the lead 10-13. As the Trojans were able to cut the lead to 12-13 but SAU went on to take the match after winning set five 12-15
What's Next
The Trojans will return home for the first time in nearly a month on Thursday, October 13 to take on the Lions of Lincoln University (Pa.) at 6:00 p.m. in the VSU Multipurpose center.
