Trojans Bounce Lions to Move To 2-0 In Conference Play

ETTRICK, VA  (September 15, 2021) – Virginia State University Volleyball swept Lincoln University (Pa.)  Monday afternoon as the Trojans move to 2-0 in conference play.

Virginia State 3, Lincoln (Pa.) 0 | (25-14, 25-11, 25-13)

First Set
After a back-and-forth start to the first set, freshman Najlaa Williams gave the Trojans two straight service aces to put the score at 11-7. The Trojans would go on to close out the set 25-13 featured by a 6-0 run headlined by a string of errors by to Lions. Freshman Helena Eubanks and senior Bethany Henry combined for six kills in the first set.
 
Second Set
The Trojans dominated the second set, as they was able to rattle off 14 straight points to push the lead out to 17-5. Redshirt-Junior Makenzy Johnson put on an assist clinic as she racked up eight assist helping the Trojans take the second set 25-11.

Third Set
Junior Makayla Berry led the Trojans in the beginning of the first set as she accounted for four kills to put her squad up 14-9. Both teams would trade points until a 7-0 run to make the final score 25-13.
 
Inside the Box Score
Following her 11 kill, .688 hitting percentage on Thursday, Helena Eubanks amassed 10 kills with only three errors in the win Monday night.
The Trojans were able to accumulate 35 kills and 12 aces in the contest.           
Junior Gabrielle Bradley and Bethany Henry combined for 11 kills while sophomore Emma Quarles and Makenzy Johnson had 14 assists each.
Makenzy Johnson also had four well-placed aces against FSU.
 
Next Up
The Trojans will be on the road to Winston-Salem University to take part in the CIAA Roundup. VSU will face Livingstone College Saturday, October 2 at 9:00 a.m. then, Saint Augustine's University at 3:00 p.m. The next day, VSU will have a date with the Broncos of Fayetteville State University at 1:00 p.m. to wrap-up the first of two CIAA Roundups.
