ETTRICK, VA (February 10, 2020)- The Virginia State University men's basketball team took down the Bulldogs of Bowie State University with a 89-66 win to hold strong to their CIAA Northern Division and conference lead.
The win moves the Trojans to a 17-7 overall record, 10-2 in the conference.
The Game
After falling to the Bulldogs last week in double overtime, the Trojans stepped into their redemption matchup with a victory in sight.
VSU took an early 12-0 run to open the contest. Despite BSU attempting to bounce back with a few shots, the Trojans continued to extend their scoring gap. A combination a shots from behind the arc and jumpers kept the VSU fans on their feet.
Francis "BJ" Fitzgerald controlled the Trojans scoring during the half with 12 points, while the team collective tallied 13 defensive rebounds in the half.
VSU entered the lock room at halftime with a score of 46-30.
Continuing to jump ahead, VSU ultimately locked in their victory. Perimeter shots and crowd pleasing dunks by William Vedder and Dallas Wilson gave the Trojans an exciting edge to their win.
The second half was a team effort in scoring in addition to 15 defensive rebounds in the half.
Undoubtedly, the Trojans were victorious in their redemption matchup over BSU with a final score of 89-66.
Leaders
VSU had four players dominate the court, scoring in double-figures. Francis "BJ" Fitzgerald led the charge for VSU with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Antwan Miles chipped in 13 points, while Armond Griebe and William Vedder were not too far behind with 12 and 11 points respectively. Andrew Corum tallied 3 steals in addition to collecting 7 rebounds for VSU, while Ryan Jones helped make plays happen leading the team with 5 assists.

The VSU men's basketball team will host the Lions of Lincoln University (PA) on Thursday, February 13 for the Trojans annual senior day recognitions. Tipoff is set for 7:30pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
