ETTRICK, VA (September 30, 2019)- The Virginia State Trojan volleyball team defeated the Panthers of Virginia Union University in 3 sets (25-13, 25-16, 25-18) in the Trojans 2nd conference game of the season.
Alongside moving to a 5-6 season record, 2-0 in the conference, the Trojans are now 4-1 in the Coach Amanda Walker coaching era.
Set 1 undoubtedly ruled in favor of the Trojans as they went on several runs to take the 25-13 win. The opening of set 2 mimicked set 1 as VSU worked to extend their lead. VUU attempted to rally back after capitalizing off of a few VSU errors for a 4-0 run, but the Trojans regained their momentum with several kills to take the 25-16 set 2 victory.
The beginning of set 3 played into the hands of the Panthers as they founded errors on the Trojans side of the court. VSU rallied back to tie the set 8-all, but a VSU error gave VUU an edge. The Trojans reconfigured their tactics and took control of set. Despite the Panthers attempting to stay in close range to take the lead, VSU jumped ahead to secure the 25-18 set 3 win and the overall game.
Jailyn Ivey controlled the game with 11 kills while Bria Anderson filled the gaps on the court with 26 assists.
VSU led is all categories to include points (48-9), kills (33-9), aces (11-0), blocks (4-0), assists (29-9) and digs (34-31).
The Trojans will return to the VSU Multipurpose Center on October 5-6 to the host CIAA Round-up 1. VSU will open the roundup on the 5th with a 5pm contest against Johnson C. Smith.
