ETTRICK, VA (October 5, 2019)- The Virginia State University volleyball team swept the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University in 3 sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-16) for the opening contest of the 2019 CIAA Roundup 1, hosted by the VSU Trojans.

The victory moves the Trojans to a 6-6 overall record, 3-0 in the conference, while the Golden Bulls fall to a 2-4 record, 1-2 in the conference.

VSU took an early set 1 lead as JCSU had a difficult time finding a consistent rhythm. The visiting Golden Bulls would soon take a 5-0 run over the Trojans to take a 12-11 lead. Battling for control, the Trojans took advantage of several JCSU errors by taking a 6-0 run and the 25-18 set 1 win.

Set 2 ruled in favor of VSU as they increased their momentum to have as much as an 8 point lead over JCSU. The late rally by the Golden Bulls was not enough for them to take the lead or the 25-19 set 2 win from the Trojans.

The final set mimicked set 1 as both teams battled for the lead. From tying the set 10-all, to taking a 22-13 lead over JCSU, VSU focused on one play at a time to meet their goal. The Trojans would eventually secure the 25-16 set 3 win and the overall victory.

Jailyn Ivey led the Trojans with 9 kills, followed by Jodorrian Taylor with 8 kills and Kennedi Cannon with 7 kills. Emma Quarles filled the gaps on the court with 27 assists, while Alexis Baker tallied 4 aces.

Despite JCSU controlling the game blocks (4-1), VSU led in the remaining categories to include points (50-28), kills (37-21), aces (12-3), assists (34-17) and digs (57-41).

The Trojans will return to the VSU Multipurpose Center on October 6 to the host day 2 of the CIAA Roundup. VSU will face St. Augustine's University at 10am and Shaw University at 2pm.
