ETTRICK, VA (September 26, 2019)- The Virginia State Trojan volleyball team swept the Bulldog of Bowie State University in 3 sets (25-10, 25-19, 25-10) to open CIAA conference play.

Alongside moving to a 4-6 season record, 1-0 in the conference, the Trojans increase their series record over the Lady Bulldogs to 37-16. Coach Amanda Walker remains undefeated in her matchups against BSU with a 5-0 winning streak over 3 seasons.

Gaining their points early in set 1, the Bulldogs briefly stayed within tying range. The host VSU Trojans regrouped quickly to leave BSU in the dust with numerous runs to extend their lead. Barely allowing the Lady Bulldogs to reach double digit scoring, the Trojans took set 1, 25-10.  

The opening of set 2 mimicked set 1 as VSU worked to extend their lead. BSU attempted to rally back with a 4-0 run to get within 4 points of tying the set. The Trojans would then capitalize off of several Lady Bulldog errors to eventually take set 2, 25-19.

Set 3 undoubtedly ruled in favor of VSU as they dominated the court with as much as an 11 point lead. The Trojans kept a steady momentum to take set 3, 25-15, and the overall 3-0 sweep.

Jailyn Ivey controlled the game with 12 kills while Bria Anderson filled the gaps on the court with 23 assists.

Despite the Lady Bulldogs dominating in blocks (4-2), the Trojans took the lead in the remaining comparisons in overall points (48-21), kills (36-14), aces (10-3), assists (32-13) and digs (34-24).

The Trojans will return to the VSU Multipurpose Center on September 30 to face the Virginia Union Panthers. The first serve is set for 6pm.
