ETTRICK, Va. (February 6, 2019)–The Virginia State University men's basketball team (20-3, 11-0 CIAA, 5-0 Northern Division) claimed an 96-87 victory over the Bears of Shaw University tonight at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
Cedric Wiggins finished with a game-high 21 points on perfect five-of-nice shots from the field to go along with one rebound, 10 assists and two steals.
Jahmere Howze posted a 20-point performance, to go with six rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Andrew Corum finished the contest with contributing 18 points.
Jalen Jackson secured 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Brandon Holley contributed 11 points.
The Trojans forced 19 Shaw turnovers in the contest. Virginia State led by as many as 18 in the first half. The score was 42-34 at the half, but Shaw (11-12, 6-7 CIAA) continued to fight by adding 53 points in the second half to cut the lead to four with 9:52 to go. From there, the Trojans continued to add points to the board ending the game 96-87.
Amir Hinton paced Shaw with game-high 43 points on 11-of-22 shooting, while Derrick Randolph added 29 points. The Trojans started the game strong securing a 5-0 lead over the Bears.
The Trojans collected a 42-34 halftime advantage, with seven different Trojans scoring in the opening period.
Despite their turnovers, the Bears managed to stay in the game in the second half due to their free throw shooting, as they connected on 13 of 18 shots in the second half. The Bears finished the contest shooting 76.5 percent from the free throw line. The Trojans finished the contest shooting 83.9 percent from the free throw line.
FIRST HALF DOMINANCE: Virginia State has scored 25 or more points in the first half of majority of the games this season, scoring 42 in the first half tonight.
POINTS OFF TURNOVERS: The Trojans made it another game this season with 15 or more points off turnovers, scoring 17 points off the Bears' 19 turnovers.
UP NEXT: The Trojans will next hit the road for a CIAA Conference Northern Division matchup against I-95 rival the Panthers of Virginia Union University on Saturday, February 9. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. at Barco-Steven Hall on the campus of Virginia Union University.
