VSU Men’s Basketball Defeats Shippensburg, 58-54, During Conference Challenge

SHIPPENSBURG, PA (November 9, 2019)- The VSU Trojan men's basketball closed out day 2 of the PSAC v. CIAA Conference Challenge with a  58-54 win over the host, Shippensburg University Raiders.

The victory starts the VSU Trojans with a 2-0 season record, while the SU Raiders are 1-1 on the season.

 First Half
Quickly moving ahead of the Raiders, the Trojans secured an early 9-0 run in the half. Missed shots and a turnovers gave the host team an advantage to close the scoring gap and tie the game 17-all with 5:33 left until halftime. The battle to regain and maintain the lead was tough, but the Trojans managed to end the half with a 32-29 lead.

VSU controlled the first 20 minutes by leading in bench points (11-5), points in the paint (20-8), and second chance points (7-4).

Second Half
Although the score remained close, the Trojans held the Raiders off by as much as 8 points. Bouncing back, Shippensburg tied the game twice before taking a short lead. A fast break jumper by Antwan Miles gave VSU a 53-52 lead with 1:02 left in regulation. Only allowing the host team to gain a single jumper, the Trojans went on a 5-2 run to secure the overall 58-54 victory.

Managing to stay in the game and take the win, VSU led the half in bench points (10-7), points off of turnovers (7-2), points in the paint (14-12) and fast break points (11-6).

Leaders
Andrew Corum and Antwan Miles were equally matched on the court with 11 points each. William Vedder rounded out the double digit scoring with 10 points for VSU. Lual Daniel Rahama took control of the Trojans rebounds with 13 recovers, the most collected in the matchup.

Rahama's 2-day performance earned him the SU Conference Challenge Tournament MVP title, while Corum was named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
Up Next
The Trojans will travel to North Carolina to take on the Bulldogs of Wingate University on November 13. Tip-off is set for 7pm.
