WINGATE, NC (November 13, 2019) - The VSU men's basketball team entered the contest against the Bulldogs of Wingate University equally matched with a 2-0 record respectively. A small point differential cost the Trojans an 80-77 loss to the home team.
The loss is the first for the Trojans, moving them to a 2-1 overall record; while the Bulldogs are now 3-0 on the season.

First Half
Taking an early control of the game,
Walter Williams and
Andrew Corum led the way with a 14-9 lead in the first 5 minutes of the contest. The Trojans held steady to their lead as the half ticked away.
In the final minutes going into halftime, a few turnovers and defensive rebounds allowed the Bulldogs to take a 28-27 lead over VSU. Although a shot from behind the arc by
Jarron Santos moved the Trojans ahead, a final second free throw by Wingate tied the game 33-all going into halftime.
VSU controlled the first 20 minutes by leading in points off of turnovers (5-4) and points in the paint (18-10).
Second Half
Both teams toggled the lead in the opening minutes of the second half. The Trojans put a halt to the battle with 2 consecutive 3-pointers to give VSU a 54-48 lead. Although long distance shooting ruled in favor of the Trojans to have an edge over the Bulldogs, several missed shots and turnovers in the final minutes of game did not allow the Trojans time to bounce back. The final seconds ruled in favor of Wingate with a final score of 80-77.
Despite VSU only leading the half in bench points (13-7), they outshot the Bulldogs during the contest in field goals (48.8%-43.3%) and 3-pointer (44.4%-26.1%).

Leaders
Walter Williams led VSU in scoring with 18 points, while
Andrew Corum secured his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Armond Griebe rounded out the double digit scoring with 10 points. Making the connections on the court,
Jarron Santos tallied 11 assists for the Trojans.

Up Next
The Trojans will travel to Mount Olive, NC on November 15-16 to participate in the Pickle Classic, hosted by the University of Mount Olive. VSU will face the host team on November 15
th at 7pm, followed by a 5pm matchup with Barton College on November 16.
