ETTRICK, VA (November 19, 2019)- For the second consecutive year, the Virginia State University volleyball team defeated the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University, 3-0, to advance to the semifinals of the CIAA Volleyball Championship.
VSU currently holds a 16-10 overall record, 13-3 in the conference. The Trojans victory ended the Golden Bulls season with a 9-12 overall record, 8-10 in the CIAA.
The first set breezed by, as the Trojans held the Golden Bulls under 20 points. Numerous JCSU errors allowed VSU to go on 2 large runs to extend the scoring gap and take the 25-10 victory.
Attempting to kick their game into high gear, the Golden Bulls worked to stay within scoring range of the lead, but the Trojans went on the 6-0 run with the help of Jailyn Ivey, Ambria McBride and Jodorrian Taylor. Keeping JCSU under 20 points for another set, VSU secured the 25-18 set 2 win.
Set 3 was filled with high intensity as the score tied 13 times. Despite JCSU rallying back and gaining their first lead of the match, VSU worked to bounce back from their errors to secure a close 25-23 set 3 win and match victory.
Jailyn Ivey controlled the court with 14 kills, while Emma Quarles tallied 15 assists. Bethany Henry jumped in with 3 blocks followed by Alexis Baker with 4 aces. Jasmine Jones led the team with 10 digs, while Ambria McBride followed close with 9 digs.
Dominating in all of the team comparisons, VSU led in points (47-18), kills (36-14), aces (8-2), blocks (3-2), assists (32-13) and digs (37-30).
The Trojans have punched their ticket to the 2019 CIAA Volleyball Championship Semifinals in Salem, VA. On November 22, VSU will face the Bears of Shaw University at 5pm at the Salem Civic Center.
