Trojan Volleyball Claims CIAA Northern Division Title on Senior Night

ETTRICK, VA (November 14, 2019)- The Virginia State University Trojan volleyball team rounded out their regular season with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-11) Senior Night victory over the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University. The win not only marked the end of the regular season, but validates the Trojans 2nd consecutive CIAA Northern Division Title.

Prior to the first serve, the Trojans honored seniors Kennedi Cannon, Jasmine Jones, Zaria Hill, Deja Lester and manager Shalay Johnson. Their contributions to the team, helped lift VSU to their successful season.

VSU ended their regular season with a 15-10 overall record, 12-3 in the conference, 8-0 in the Northern Division. ECSU finished their season with a 9-16 record, 9-7 in the conference and 5-4 in the division.

Keeping the Vikings under 20 points in each set, the Trojans quickly breezed by their opponents.

Going on several runs in the first set, VSU extended the lead by as much as 12 points to take the 25-13 set 1 victory.

Despite gaining the first 6 points of the set, ECSU attempted to rally back by capitalizing off of several VSU errors. The Trojans bounced back and stayed focused, allowing them to take the 25-16 set 2 win.

Set 3 undoubtedly ruled of favor of the Trojans as they quickly claimed their victory with a set score of 25-11.

Jailyn Ivey controlled the court with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Emma Quarles tallied 19 assists. Zaria Irons jumped in with 3 blocks followed by Ashanti Day with 3 aces.

Dominating in majority of the team comparisons, VSU led in points (49-18), kills (38-11), aces (6-1), assists (33-11) and digs (46-34).

The Trojans will host the CIAA Championship Quarterfinals on November 19 at the VSU Multipurpose Center. Waiting on the final results of the southern division, the 6pm serve on the 19th will feature the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University or the Blue Bears of Livingstone College.

After plowing through the season, the Trojans have their sights set on the 2019 CIAA Semifinals and Championship game in Salem, VA on November 22 and 24.
