ETTRICK, VA (October 6, 2019)- The VSU Trojan volleyball team split day 2 of the 2019 CIAA Roundup with a 3-0 sweep over St. Augustine's University and a tough 3-2 loss to Shaw University.
The Trojans hosted the 2 day northern division roundup that featured Johnson C. Smith, St. Augustine's, Shaw, Lincoln PA and Virginia Union.
At the conclusion of the roundup, VSU holds 7-7 overall record, 4-1 in the conference.
GAME 1 VS. SAU
Opening day 2 on court 1, VSU kept the SAU Falcons under 20 points during each set.
VSU did not hesitate to dominate the court as the opening 2 sets mirrored each other. The Trojans took an extensive lead early in both eventually taking the 25-13 win in sets 1 and 2.
The Falcons attempted to bounce back in set 3 by staying in scoring range of the Trojans. Despite tying the set 9 times, VSU was able to take the lead after having an advantage off of several SAU errors to secure the 25-19 set and the overall 3-0 win.
Kennedi Cannon and
Ambria McBride were equally matched with 7 kills each, while
Jailyn Ivey was close behind with 6.
Emma Quarles filled the gaps on the court with 19 assists, while
Jasmine Jones tallied 5 aces.
VSU controlled all of the team comparisons to include points (54-17), kills (40-13), aces (10-3), blocks (4-1) assists (33-11) and digs (51-40).

GAME 2 VS. SHAW
Each set proved to be a challenge as they Trojans faced the Shaw Bears. The meeting of both teams was in the 2018 CIAA Championship Finals game.
Toggling back and forth for the lead in set 1, 3 final VSU kills earned the Trojans the 25-23 set 1 win. Set 2 ruled in favor of Bears as VSU was not able to bounce back. Â
VSU undoubtedly took set 3 with a 25-16 score, but did not have any control of their plays, falling 25-10 in set 4.
Although they score tied 4 times and the VSU battled for each point they received, the Trojans were not able to take the set nor the game, falling short with a 15-12 set 5 loss.
Jailyn Ivey led the Trojans with 17 kills, followed by
Deja Lester with 14 and
Jodorrian Taylor with 10 kills.
Emma Quarles filled the gaps on the court with 27 assists, while
Alexis Baker tallied 3 aces.
Despite falling in the 5
th set, VSU lead in all of the team comparisons to include points (67-58), kills (55-51), aces (7-5), blocks (5-2) assists (50-44) and digs (79-63).
UP NEXT
The Trojans will return to the VSU Multipurpose Center on October 14 to face the Lions of Lincoln University. The first serve is slated for 6pm.
