RICHMOND, VA (October 23, 2019)- The Virginia State University volleyball team maintains an unblemished CIAA Northern Division record, 5-0 , after defeated the Virginia Union University Panthers in a 3-set (26-24, 25-19, 25-17) sweep.

The win elevates the Trojans to a 12-9 season record, 9-3 in the conference, while the Panthers drop to a 7-10 overall record, 7-4 in the conference.

Despite the score tying 4 times, VUU held the lead over VSU for majority of the opening set. When all hope seemed lost, the Trojans rallied back to take the final 4 points of the set with 3 kills and an ace to secure the 26-24 win.

The Trojans maintained a lead in set 2, but the Panthers followed close behind. VUU took advantage of a few VSU errors to take a small 19-17 lead, but the Trojans would soon bounce back. Holding the Panthers to their 19 points, VSU went on an 8-0 run to take the 25-19 set 2 victory.

Running off of the previous set's momentum, the Trojans surpassed the Panthers to secure the 25-17 set win and the overall victory.

Dominating the court with 19 kills, 15 digs and 2 blocks was junior outside hitter Jailyn Ivey. Rookie setter Emma Quarles kept the plays alive for the Trojans with 25 assists.

VSU led in all comparison categories to include points (63.5-30), kills (49-27), aces (10-2), blocks (4-1), assists (45-22) and digs (53-41).

The Trojans will travel to Elizabeth City, NC to take on the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University on October 28. The first serve is set for 6pm.
