ELIZABETH CITY, NC (October 28, 2019)- The Virginia State University volleyball team continues to extend their CIAA Northern Division record after taking down the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University in a 3-1 matchup.
The win moves the Trojans to a 13-9 overall record, 10-3 in the conference, and 6-0 in the division, while ECSU falls to a 7-13 season record, 6-6 in the conference.
Set 1 took an unexpected turn, when the Vikings took control of the game. Countless Trojan errors allowed ECSU to take an 18-5 lead. VSU attempted to rally back with a 5-0 run, but their efforts were not enough to take the win, falling 25-16.
Bouncing back in the remaining sets, the Trojans kicked their game into high gear.
After tying the score 8 times in set 2, VSU jumped ahead with several kills to take the lead. Finishing the set off with points off of Viking errors, the Trojans took the 25-20 victory.
Holding the home team under 20 points, VSU secured the 25-10 and 25-18 set 3 and 4 victories to take the overall win. Â
Dominating the court with 16 kills and 3 aces was junior outside hitter Jailyn Ivey. Not too far behind with 14 kills was sophomore Ambria McBride. Rookie setter Emma Quarles kept the plays alive for the Trojans with 19 assists followed by Bria Anderson with 17 assists.
Despite the Vikings leading in blocks (6-4) and digs (32-27), VSU led in the remaining comparison categories to include points (65-48), kills (50-34), aces (11-8), and assists (38-30).
The Trojans will travel to Lynchburg, VA to take on the Hornets of the University of Lynchburg in a non-conference contest on November 1. The first serve is set for 6pm.
