BOWIE, MD (October 17, 2019)- The VSU Trojans Volleyball team secured another CIAA divisional win after defeating the Bulldogs of Bowie State University on the road in a 3- set (25-20, 25-8, 25-19) sweep.
The win moves the Trojans to a 9-7 overall record, 7-2 in the conference, while the Bulldogs fall to a 3-13 overall record, 1-7 in the conference.
Set 1 was a battle for the lead, as both teams worked to keep control. After tying the score 6 times, the Trojans managed to jump ahead off of several Bulldog errors. A timeout and attempted rally by BSU was not enough for the home team to win the set. The Trojans took set 1, 25-20.
VSU undoubtedly won set 2 with a 25-8 victory. The Bulldog gained majority of their points off of Trojans errors, but the VSU secured the win with an 8-0 run, the largest of the set.
BSU took an early lead in set 3, with a score of 9-5 over the Trojans at the first charged timeout for the visiting team. Trailing 16-12, Coach Walker called the Trojans 2nd timeout of the set to redirect the team's momentum. VSU rallied back with an 8-0 run to take the lead and eventually the 25-19 set 3 win.
The 3 set sweep keeps the Trojans with an unblemished record over BSU in the Coach Walker Era.
Jailyn Ivey returned home to Bowie, MD to control the game for the Trojans with 13 kills and 13 digs. Â Bria Anderson filled the gaps on the court with 18 assists, while Emma Quarles was not too far behind with 15 assists.
Despite BSU having a slight edge in blocks (4-2), VSU led in all of the other comparison categories to include points (49-31), kills (39-20), aces (8-7), assists (38-18) and digs (43-28).
The Trojans will travel to Bowie, MD to take in the Bulldogs of Bowie State University on October 17. The first serve is set for 6pm.
As the season progresses, the Trojans have their sights set on the 2019 CIAA Championships in Salem, VA on November 21 and 23.
