Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Secures Two Wins on Day 1 of the CIAA Round-up

ETTRICK, VA (September 8, 2018)- Alongside hosting the first CIAA Volleyball Round-up of the 2018 season, the Virginia State University Trojans volleyball team secured 2 wins on Day 1 of the event. The Trojans opened the round-up with a 3-0 (25-17, 25- 15, 27-25) victory over new CIAA members Claflin University and grabbed a 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-10) win over St. Augustine's University.

Kennedi Cannon secured the most kills of the game with 8, followed by Hailey Heyward and Jailyn Ivey with 7 kills each. Tiara Ramey served up 2 aces, while Bria Anderson and Ambria McBride each tallied a single ace.

Despite Claflin gaining the first 4 points, VSU stepped up and took charge of the court as Claflin played in their first set as a CIAA member institution. The Trojans moved to extend the gap in set 1 for a 25-17 win, and stayed consistent in set 2 for a 25-15 win. The Claflin Panthers attempted to rally back in set 3, going point for point. The Panthers had a chance to take the win with the game tied 25-25, but VSU overpowered Claflin with 2 final kills by Cannon to take the overall 3-0 victory.

The Trojans made a quick effort to secure a 3-0 sweep over the Falcons of St. Augustine's University. Kennedi Cannon led the way with 9 kills, followed by Hailey Heyward and Miya Jones with 5 kills each. Jailyn Ivey collected 5 aces while Jasmine Jones secured a single ace to accompany Ambria McBride's 3 aces.

The Falcons held the lead at the beginning of the set, but the Trojans took charge of the game to take the 25-10 set win. VSU did not give SAU a chance to jump ahead as they capitalized off of several Falcon errors to take the 25-16 set 2 win. Set 3 mimicked set 1 as the Trojans won set 3, 25-10, for the overall victory.

The Trojans currently hold an 8-3 overall record, 2-0 in the CIAA.

VSU will return to action on September 9, as they host Day 2 of the 2018 CIAA Volleyball Round-up at the VSU Multipurpose Center. The first serve is set for 10am against Fayetteville State University.
