ETTRICK, VA (September 27, 2018) - The Virginia State Trojans volleyball team fell to the Chowan Hawks in a 4-set northern division conference matchup.
Â
The first set was a strong start for the Trojans. Securing a swift 25-10 win, gave the Trojans high momentum going into the second set. Chowan rallied back in set 2, trading scoring runs with the start of a 6-2 lead. Th Hawks won the set with a score of 25-17.
Â
Set 3 mimicked set 2. Both teams battled for the lead, attempting to expand the scoring gap. The third set was more or less like the second. Various errors on the Trojans toward the end of the set gave the Hawks a chance to pull away. Even with the errors, the Trojans battled furiously despite losing the set with a final score of 26-24.
Â
The fourth and final set started much like every set this evening. The teams battled for possessions, matching each other's moves. It wasn't until Chowan came across two separate 6-0 runs that the game turned in Chowan's favor.
Â
Aside from the outcome of the game the Trojans did have plenty of bright spots. Sophomore Jailyn Ivy led the game with 13 kills, alongside freshman Ambria McBride and Junior Kennedi Cannon registering 7 kills each. The Trojans logged six blocks to Chowan's zero.
Â
The loss moves the Trojans to a 13-6 overall record, 7- 3 in the conference.
