ETTRICK, VA (September 19, 2018) - The Virginia State University Trojan volleyball team took a 3-set (25-15, 25-22, 27-25) victory over the Panthers of Virginia Union University in their CIAA Northern Division matchup.
The win moves the Trojans to a 10-4 overall record, 4-1 in the conference, while the Panthers fall to a 2-11 overall record, 1-3 in the CIAA.
Senior Hailey Heyward dominated the court with 8 kills, 2 blocks and a single ace for VSU. Senior Tiara Ramey and junior Kennedi Cannon each allied 7 kills while Cannon and sophomore Jailyn Ivey each collected a single ace. Seniors Myia Jones and Tiara Ramey each secured 2 blocks for the Trojans.
VSU took charge of set 1 with a strong lead. Capitalizing on the Panthers errors, the Trojans quickly gain the 25-15 set victory. Despite VUU attempting to stay in scoring range of the Trojans in set 2, VSU bounced back with 2 kills to take the 25-22 set 2 win. Although the Trojans grasped the lead early in set 3, the Panthers rallied back and took an 11-8 lead. After tying the set 17 times, the Trojans managed to outlast the Panthers for a 27-25 set win and the game.
VSU will return to action on September 22-23, as they travel to Winston-Salem, NC for the CIAA Roundup, hosted by Winston-Salem State University. The Trojans will take on the host WSSU at 12pm on day 1, followed by a 3pm matchup against Livingstone College.
