ETTRICK, VA (September 1, 2018)- The Virginia State University Trojans volleyball team rounded out their VSU Tournament weekend with a 4-0 record after securing a 3-0 win over St. Augustine's University (25-8, 25-15, 25-14) and Richard Bland College (25-14, 27-25, 27-25).
The Trojan collected a 3-set sweep over the St. Augustine's University Falcons to open day 2 of the VSU Volleyball Tournament. The Trojans capitalized on the numerous Falcon errors, allowing VSU to take set 1 with a score of 25-8. SAU attempted to rally back, but the Trojans stayed focus taking a 25-15 set 2 victory. Set 3 ruled in favor of VSU with a final score of 25-14.
Senior Myia Jones led the contest with 6 kills, while junior Kennedi Cannon and sophomore Jailyn Ivey each chipped in 5 kills. Sophomore Bria Anderson's 10 assists were accompanied by Cannon's 10 digs. Myia Jones and rookie Ambria McBride were equally matched with 2 aces each.
The Trojans had to battle for their victories in a close contest against Richard Bland College. VSU was able to capture a quick 25-14 set 1 win over Richard Bland. Kicking their game into high gear, Richard Bland went point for point with the VSU in sets 2 and 3. The Trojans managed to find flaws in Richard Bland's plays in order to take the back to back 27-25 set wins.
Senior Tiara Ramey led the way for the Trojans with 12 kills followed by sophomore Jailyn Ivey with 10 kills. To accompany Jasmine Jones' 2 aces and 14 digs, Victoria Holman chipped in 18 assists.
The Trojans currently hold a 6-2 overall record after 2 tournaments to kick off their 2018 season.
VSU will return to action on September 4, for a 6pm home match against Shepherd University.
