ETTRICK, VA (August 31, 2018)- The Virginia State University Trojan Volleyball team had a victorious start to their 2018 VSU Tournament with a close 3-2 (25-21, 9-25, 18-25, 25-6, 16-14) win over the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus University and a 3-0 sweep against the Trojans of the University of Mount Olive.
The Trojans opened their second tournament of the 2018 season with a close 3-2 win over Alderson Broaddus. Sophomore Jailyn Ivey led the way for VSU with 14 kills, followed by senior Tiara Ramey with 12 kills. Alongside sophomore Victoria Holman's 24 assists and Bria Anderson's 14 assists, junior Jasmine Jones tallied 21 digs to accompany Ramey's 18 digs.
After a battle for the lead in set 1, the Trojans worked their way to a 22-16 lead, eventually taking the set, 25-21. Alderson Broaddus rallied back in sets 2 and 3 to take a 2-1 lead over VSU. The Trojans kicked their game into high gear for set 4 with an doubtless 25-6 victory. Set 5 kept the crowd on their feet as the set tied 12 times before the Trojans captured the final 2 points for the 16-14 set win to take the game.
The VSU Trojans outlasted the UMO Trojans in an intense 3-set sweep. Going point for point in set 1, VSU capitalized off of a kill from senior Myia Jones and an error on UMO to take the set, 28-26. The crowds energetic VSU Pride kept the teams momentum up as they took set 2 (25-22) and set 3 (25-18) for the overall win.
Senior Hailey Heyward took charge of the court with 10 kills, while Bria Anderson collect 15 assists to accompany junior Kennedi Cannon's 15 digs.
The VSU Trojans currently hold a 4-2 overall record as they prepare for day 2 of their tournament.
On September 1, VSU will take on St. Augustine's University at 10am and Richard Bland College at 2pm for a VSU Tournament Day 2 matchup.
