ETTRICK, Va. (August 25, 2018) - The Virginia State University Volleyball team rounded out their 2018 opening weekend with a 2-2 overall record. After falling to North Greenville University (3-0) and securing a 5 set win over Concord on day 1, the Trojans split day 2 with a loss to King University and a 3 set non-conference win over Elizabeth City State University.
Despite Jailyn Ivey leading the game with 10 kills, VSU was unable to collect more than 15 points in a set, taking the 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-7) loss to the Tornados of King University.
VSU took control of the court in their non-conference matchup against the Vikings of ECSU.
Although the Vikings tallied the first few points in set 1, the Trojans quickly took the lead with a score of 12-5. VSU continued to make key plays to take set 1, 25-18.
ECSU attempted to battle back halfway through set 2, coming within 3 points (15-12) of the lead. Several consecutive aces and Viking errors gave VSU the needed edge to take set 2, 25-13.
VSU kept their momentum into set 3 as they grasp the set, 25-18, for the overall victory.
Currently, VSU holds a 2-2 overall record for the 2018 season.
The Trojans will host their second VSU Tournament of the season on August 31-September 1 at the VSU Multipurpose Center. The team looks to improve on their skills as they host Alderson Broaddus University, the University of Mount Olive, St. Augustine's University and Richard Bland College.
