No. 1 Virginia State defeats CIAA Champs Virginia Union University, 81-76

Box Score  Ettrick, Va. (March 10, 2018) – The No.1 seed Virginia State University men's basketball team (25-4) secured a 81-76 victory over the Panthers of Virginia Union University tonight at the VSU Multipurpose Center. With the victory the men's basketball team continues its NCAA playoffs appearance as they look to face the Shippensburg Raiders at 7:30pm on March 11.

Richard Granberry led the Trojans with 18 points and two rebounds on the evening. Walter Williams was VSU's second leading scorer, ending the contest with 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Cyonte Melvin chipped in with 14 points, followed by Trey Brown and Waymond Wright with 13 points each respectively.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Virginia State started the contest with securing a three pointer by Walter Williams to take a 3-0 lead. Walter Williams then scored a jumper for the Trojans at the 15:56 mark edging the Panthers 9-6. The Trojans would jump out to a 21-16 lead with 9:22 left in the first half. A basket by Kori Cooley put the Panthers within one of the Trojans with 5:50 on the clock. The Panthers then added a three-pointer to take a 30-26 lead. The Trojans then scored back to back three-pointers by Waymond Wright with 1:44 left to take a 34-33 lead to close out the half.
 
Second Half:
Virginia State started the second half scoring the first basket by Waymond Wright with 19:45 left in the contest to take a 36-33 lead. The Trojans would grow its lead, 46-42, with 15:11 left on the clock. VSU then secured a three-pointers, advancing its lead 51-44 at the 13:52 mark. The Panthers would attempt to take the lead by added 32 points over the remaining minutes. The Trojans ended the game adding its final basket from the free throw line taking the victory, 81-76.
 
Virginia State ended the contest shooting 50.9 percent from the field (29-of-57), knocking down 10-of-22 three pointers (45.5 percent) and shooting 68.4 percent from the free throw line (13-19).

VSU will advance its NCAA playoff appearance to the semi-finals to face Shippensburg University on March 11 at 7:30 p.m.
