Box Score ETTRICK, Va. (February 7, 2018) – The Virginia State University men's basketball team (19-3, 9-3 CIAA) claimed a 60-57 victory over the Panthers of Virginia Union tonight at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
The win was also Virginia State's second over Virginia Union this season after taking them down for an 82-72 Freedom Classic victory.
Richard Granberry finished with 16 points on 6-of-11 shots from the field to go along with eight rebounds, and three blocks.
Cyonte Melvin posted a 14-point performance, to go with six rebound and two steals.
Brandon Holley finished the contest contributing nine points.
Virginia Union led 31-23 at the half, but Virginia State continued to fight by adding 37 points in the second half to take a four point advantage with 2:59 to go. From there, the Trojans continued to add points to the board ending the game 60-57.
Todd Hughes paced Virginia Union with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting, while Jemal Smith and Kory Cooley added nine points each.
Despite their 12 turnovers, the Panthers managed to stay in the game in the second half due to their shooting from the field, as they connected on 12 of 33 shots in the second half. The Trojans finished the contest shooting 76 percent from the free throw line compared to Virginia Union's 33 percent from the free throw line.
