MURFREESBURO, NC (October 29, 2018)- The Virginia State University volleyball team, under the leadership of head coach Amanda Walker continues to maintain their No. 1 CIAA Northern Division spot after defeating the Hawks of Chowan University in a 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-11, 25-13) road contest.
Securing majority of their set 1 points in kills, VSU maintained the lead to take the 25-18 victory. The Hawks rallied back in set 2 as both teams battled for the lead. Despite tying the score 15 times, the Trojans were not able to take set 2 with a score of 26-24. VSU undoubtedly regain momentum in the final 2 sets, holding Chowan to under 15 points. With a set 3 score of 25-11 and a set 4 score of 25-13, the Trojans secured the overall match win.
Jailyn Ivey took control of the court, securing 13 kills. Kennedi Cannon was not too far behind with 12 kills, while Tiara Ramey chipped in 10 kills. Alongside 2 aces from Cannon and 6 blocks by Hailey Heyward, Bria Anderson helped the Trojans with 41 assists.
The victory moves the Trojans to a 19-10 overall record, 12-4 in the CIAA, 7-2 in the Northern Division.
VSU will return to action on November 2 with a CIAA road contest against the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University. The first serve is set for 6pm.
